Everything about “Sunburn” - from how it was recorded, who played on it, what the songs about and the actual sunburn itself- was unexpected.
The photo above is me at my old studio where the song was recorded (Shoutout to Dan Rome for the pic!) As far as the sounds go- I fell in love with this old plastic yamaha keyboard (see video below) that I found in Tom Elmhirst’s Studio at Electric Lady and most of the tracks- from the drumbeat to the keys and steel drum parts all came from that.
My long standing homie and fellow collaborator Wiley came in and made the bass part really sing- and Joe Visciano turned my initial shitty drumbeat attempt into a banger-
One the most unexpected parts during tracking was getting Carter Lang to add guitar on the song. He was in town playing with SZA and came by the studio with Joe while I was working on it and I somehow convinced him to noodle for a moment- but i will say- he might be one of the best musical minds out there- was a hella insane treat to have him on this song.
I’ve worked with hundreds of musicians in the studio but when you work with someone who adds something different to the production- that’s insanely rare. It’s hard to hear what could be when it’s not there yet, and Carter has an incredible gift in knowing how to create space and contrast melodically and rhythmically- my mind was definitely blown.
And before I knew it- we were in mixing With Steve and mastering with Idania!
And then there’s the Sunburn B-Sides-
Like I did with Running, the B-sides were mostly composed of additional parts that were a part of the original recording process & some new ones as well-
I have my homie and fellow artist Cody Crump to thank for the Aloe Vera Mix- He’s an amazingly talented artist and producer in LA and probably one of the coolest funnest most hilarious and awesome people that exists-
And the additional tracks on the Tiki Room version & Sunburn in the Snow are thanks to a handful of peeps-
First my right hand man - Will & the Bird Language crew - opened my brain to some new verb send ideas which I immediately fell in love with- we printed a few different sends and it really gave the song a memory and vibe.
Also, huge thanks to first friend in New York City was Jon Graboff who I’d call one of the most aesthetic and tasteful pedal steel players that has ever existed- he knows something else that any other pedal steel doesn’t - but he turns it into a whole new instrument. We met when I moved to the city after college I got an apartment and a call to come up a week before my lease to record at The Magic Shop- I think I got the gig because I pretended that I was living there already- but either way- One of the best ways to start your life in NYC- at the magic shop with Jon-
I also fell in love with the vibraphone after making the original and thanks to Quinn at The Creamery recording studio in Brooklyn.
